It grew from just a small fishing village with few inhabitants to become one of the most popular tourist destinations in the Canary Islands. The boom began in the 60's when the Hotel Fariones and the Hotel San Antonio were built, which would mark the future of the area. It was named in honour of the Virgen del Carmen, the patron saint of fishermen. The Day of El Carmen's festivities involve carrying the Virgin on board a ship and sailing a short route along the coast of Lanzarote. Puerto del Carmen's success is largely owed to the more than 6 km of beaches that line its coast, its calm and peaceful waters and its rewarding natural surroundings. Running parallel to the coast is the Avenida de las Playas, a broad promenade that combines all kinds of tourist services on the one hand, such as shops, businesses, cafés, restaurants and leisure arcades, and miles of peaceful beaches on the other.
